IP telephony

Service title

IP Telephony Service

Service description

The service gives the chance to the GRnet partners to exchange calls free of charge among them as well as with the ViDe's global video and voice over IP network test bed.

The service is implemented in cooperation with GUnet. GRnet contributes to the service design, protocol support, device installation and configuration in the backbone network so that the service guarantees security and quality for all the interconnected partners. GUnet contributes to the service by offering technical support, availability of service, maintenance of the implemented dialling plan as well as access to the PSTN network via its own circuits.

The service is based on H.323 protocol. The H.323 backbone is implemented by a national gatekeeper that supports the national as well as the international prefixes of the interconnected partners. The phone calls can take place either via conventional telephone devices behind a conventional PBX or via IP telephones or via desktop H.323 applications (i.e. netmeeting, Openphone, IP Phones etc).

In cooperation with GUnet a backup gatekeeper has been installed to replace the primary one in case of failure. The backup device is installed at Thessaloniki and takes over the operations of the primary one in case of failure or in case the primary device is unreachable due to network failure.

Every interconnected partner needs to have its own infrastructure that is at least one gatekeeper server and an H.323 gateway interconnected to the PBX of the partner that could support IP telephony services. IP telephony services could be supported separately by an independent PBX device. The partner's gatekeeper communicates with the national gatekeeper for a call to be established.

The GRnet partners as well as their prefixes that are supported by the VoIP service can be found at: GUnet Voice Over IP Network Topology

Who is responsible

The management of IP telephony service is currently undertaken by the NOC of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and GUnet Voice Over IP Administrative Team.

What are the services that are offered and who may concern?

GRnet offers IP Telephony service based on H.323 standard. Therefore, the service is implemented with the use of gatekeeper/gateway model. GRnet guarantees phone calls quality and security. GUnet is responsible for maintaining the uninterrupted operation and interconnection of a new partner to this VoIP closed user group. In addition, support of other multimedia protocols (SIP, etc) is tested.

Are there any related services?

IP Telephony service is closely related to the GRnet video conferencing services.

Who has the right to use it?

The end users of the GRnet interconnected partners have the right to use this service.

The partners NOCs are responsible for setting up and configuring the VoIP equipment per partner in order to interconnect the partner to the VoIP service.

Hardware and software requirements

A partner wanting to use this service needs to install at least a gatekeeper server and a gateway. The gateway should have the appropriate interfaces in order to be able to interconnect with the legacy PBX of the partner. The gatekeeper software can run on a general purpose server or on a network device (i.e. a router). In any case, the cost varies accordingly (i.e. open source free s/w or commercial products by Cisco, Radvision etc).
